Gardner serves notice in Symon tournament

St. Joseph native Mike Gardner lived up to his lofty advance billing by whipping John Holtz of Overland Park Friday night in the highlight Open Singes match of the 7th Annual Bob Symon Memorial Handball Tournament.

Gardner, who presently resides in Tucson, Ariz., took 21-4 and 21-2 victories in opening-night action of the YMCA tourney. The victory moved him into the Open quarter-finals where he'll meet Tom Kezlan of Kansas City at 10 this morning.

At the other end of the bracket, Jim Cosentino of Kansas City downed Omar Atlas of KC, 21-10 and 21-11. In other open singles matches Friday, Kezlan downed Bob Marshall of Prairie Village by scores of 21-20 and 21-14. Marshall is the current Kansas State champion.

Max Gaither of Topeka took the measure of Joe Sutera (KC), 21-9 and 21-8, while Greg Bayes of St. Louis downed R. Kelly, 21-11 and 21-8.

Jim Faulk of Dallas prevailed over George Cahill of Shawnee, Ks. in one of the toughest matches, 21-10, 6-21 and 11-0.

Edwin Stead of St. Louis, seeded fourth in open singles, took a default when George Riggins of Des Moines failed to show. Stead will now meet Bill Bauerly of Sioux City, who beat Michael Kelley of KC, 10-21, 21-7 and 11-3.

In contender's singles, Jim Roth of St. Joe gave Shawnee's Michael Booth a tough go before falling, 17-21 and 19-21. Art Burnstein of St. Joe was overpowered by third-seeded Arthur Hemmerlein of Gladstone, 21-1 and 21-7. At 10 this morning, Phil Lipira of St. Joe will face Roger Gondek of Bonner Springs, Ks.

The tournament resumes this morning at 9 on the four YMCA courts, with quarterfinals in the open singles division. Contender's singles swing into semifinal play, while the open singles semis begin in the afternoon.

Play will conclude with four championship matches on Sunday morning.
